CO-MAP-V: COVID-19 Massachussetts Map and Visualization Tool
Class Project (CSE 583: Software Development for Data Scientists)
Used synthetic data from Synthea that was formatted in an OMOP Common Data model to visualize the start of a COVID-19 outbreak in Massachusetts. Created various visualizations, both geographical and statistical, to showcase a dashboard like design that allows users to explore and compare between months and counties. Visualizations were created using Plotly and arranged using Dash, the website uses Bootstrap and the dashboard application is hosted on Heroku allowing for final (and interactive) hosting on GitHub Pages.
Visualizing Algorithmic Cause of Death Predictions
Class Project (CSE 512: Data Visualization)
Used verbal autopsy data to visualize relationships between causes of death, symptoms, death, region, and algorithm. Four different and interactive visualizations were created using D3. All visualizations interact with each other in terms of dataset and can be used congruently to allow users a deeper exploration of the data from various perspectives.
Predictive Analytics Solutions for Sepsis Patients in Acute Care
Published a systematic review to see if there is an ideal predictive analytics solution for sepsis detection or mortality associated with sepsis by performing a literature search in PubMed to identify publications of current practices and studies that have used predictive analytics. Identified and categorized the characteristics of each study to verify inclusion, and then analyzed common themes and differences. We then reviewed the articles to identify key themes to better understand the issues in applying predictive analytics to sepsis detection.
Virtual Online Communities for Aging Life Experiences (VOCALE)
Currently on a team that is testing the feasibility and usability of using an online discussion platform for frail elderly adults to learn, manage, and cope with their changing symptoms. Tasks include pitching and recruiting qualified participants from various Seattle-area retirement communities and training them on using the discussion board in multiple one-on-one training sessions. Training materials (physical and digital training guide and video supplement) were created through an iterative process of speaking, observing, and interacting with a pilot group of elderly individuals.
Extracting Social Determinants Information from Clinical Text Notes
Creating an approachable method/framework that is generalizable to extract social determinants information (e.g. housing stability) from unstructured data sources in the EHR. Additionally, we will compare the quality of data that is extracted via natural language processing classification techniques with extracting structured data sources (e.g. ICD 9/10 codes).
Using Log Data to Assess Authentication Behaviors
Together with Jason Thomas, working with a local hospital to identify ways to help inform customized solutions of authentication while maintaining privacy and promoting standards across wards and staff.
Leveraging Mobile Technologies to Communicate Genetic Testing Information
Class Project (BIME 554: Biomedical Information Interactions and Design)
Performed workflow analysis and stakeholder interviews to identify points where mobile technologies could be leveraged to reduce workload on administrative staff, increase clinic efficiency and provide better services to patients. Team identified three major areas where changes patient in-take, insurance authorization and return of results. I created a potential design solution to revamp patient in-take by making an online tool accessible by patients that would collect family history and develop a patient pedigree.
Monitoring and Visualizing of Strategic Health Issues: Creation of an Internal Dashboard for Benton County, WA
Class Project (BIME 533: Public Health Informatics)An internal dashboard was proposed to assist the Benton-Franklin Health District (BFHD) health officer monitor health trends within the community and assess the progress of interventions. By utilizing stakeholder interviews, the Visual Information Seeking Mantra, and user-centered design, the mockup dashboard presented data cleanly and effectively to allow for easy usability among users of varying health literacy.
Applied Human Computational Genomics (AHCG) Pipeline
Class Project (BIOL8803F: Human Computational Genomics)Variant calling pipeline for automated genomic data analysis. Automated script performed variant call analysis and variant recalibration. End result created charts and a report.
Genome characterization of human papillomavirus (HPV) 16
Summer Project, Mentor: Dr. Kai YuFull genome analysis and exploration of HPV 16 to create a prediction model to forecast cervical cancer likelihood and risk. The primary focus was to identify the viral genetic basis of HPV carcinogenicity and to globally analyze the differences patients with and without cervical cancer through random forest classification.
Advanced eICU Clinical Data Visualization Tool using FHIR
Class Project (CS 6440: Introduction to Health Informatics)Collaborated with the eICU department at Emory Healthcare. Helped to develop a FHIR adapter for the existing archiveDB (a reduced local copy of data) to create an exchange of FHIR compliant messages to and from the archiveDB of the eICU system.
Development of a typing scheme for non-typeable
H. influenzae
Class Project (BIOL7210A: Computational Genomics)Used unassembled genome sequence data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for computational genomics. Participated in two groups (gene prediction and functional annotation).
Comparison of multi-compartmental models for the modeling of the 2014 Ebola epidemic
Class Project (BME 8813: Biomedical and Health Informatics)Used data from the World Health Organization (WHO), CDC, and Virginia Polytech Institute and State University. Compared and validated the prediction powers of various compartmental models. Created a MATLAB GUI (
video demo) to allow for easy comparison between models and countries of interest.
